Forum will be this coming Saturday, Sept. 22, in Humanist Hall, 390 27th Street near Broadway, Oakland. Registration starts 12 noon, program starts at 1 pm.

Dear friends and comrades,
Two years ago a people’s hearing on racial justice and police killings was held in Oakland, and, in the aftermath of the killing of Oscar Grant Jr, many witnesses, victims, and families stepped forward to offer their testimony and thereby empower each other and the communities which have suffered from such repeated attacks.
Similar exposures and outcries have taken place across the country: the escalation of “stop and frisk” harassment and “racial profiling” abuse, standard racial profiling attacks on Blacks and Latinos, Islamophobic attacks on Muslims, unprecedented levels of ICE raids and deportations, and other such violations of humanity. Since the murder of Trayvon Martin early this year, the Malcolm X Grassroots Movements has issued a report documenting that in the first 6 months of 2012, police murdered a Black person every 36 hours!
It is the history of such abuse and killings which have led to repeated efforts of the targeted communities to defend themselves. But, official policy which has long been to criminalize all such efforts at self defense.
IT IS TIME TO SUPPORT AND DEFEND THE RIGHT OF COMMUNITIES TO DEFEND THEMSELVES.
On September 22 this month there will be a forum in Oakland to defend the right to self-defense, to educate the communities suffering from racial profiling, and to launch new organizing efforts in these communities. The Forum, “SELF-RESPECT AND COMMUNITY SELF-DEFENSE IN A LAND OF ENDLESS RACIAL PROFILING”, will feature new materials on the history and methods of community self-defense, and guest speaker Djibril Toure, a leader of the the campaign against “Stop and Frisk” in New York as well as the newly launched National People’s Self-Defense Campaign, who will bring his experience to share.
WE NEED YOUR HELP. IT IS TIME TO SUPPORT AND DEFEND THE RIGHT OF COMMUNITIES TO DEFEND THEMSELVES!!!
Today, the most urgent need is to gather the financial resources to make sure this forum succeeds. We have kept costs low, and we will work to keep the basic needs met by the communities themselves. But we need additional support, and quickly, to pay the rental of the hall and equipment, the airfare for our valuable speaker, and for printing costs.
